Dussehra is a festival celebrated with great fervour, not just in India but also in Nepal, and Bangladesh

The name Dussehra comes from the Sanskrit language “Dash” and “Hara”. It literally means the defeat of the sun

This year Dussehra will be celebrated on 24 October 2023

On this day a huge effigy of Ravana is made and then firecrackers are filled in it and set ablaze

In Tamil Nadu, another name of this festival is Golu.

Along with Ravana, the effigies of Kumbhkarna and Meghanad are also burned on this day

Puja offerings include Pindi khoya tarts, payasam, coconut barfi, rasgulla, badam halwa and  besan laddoo

The first time Dussehra was celebrated in the Mysore Palace in the 17th century, and the idea of burning Ravana is given by King Wodeyar
